As a fellow engineer, I worked with Jim at the Botanic Garden and found him one of the most easy going people I've ever known. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

My sympathies to your family for this great loss. I worked with Jim at the botanic garden. He was a great guide and mentor to me during my first years as an engineer. Not an actual part of his job, of course - just something else to volunteer for and another way to help someone.

My knowledge of Jim dates back only four years when I joined his Sunday am crew at the outdoor Chicago Botanic Garden's railroad garden.  This also included the indoor "Winter Wonderland Express" season.  He was an avid "railroader".  Jim was the one I conversed with the most each Sunday, from not only, of course, solving issues attendant to running the trains, but on varied topics such as movies he had seen, recommendations for restaurants he and his wife and friends had recently been to, even conversing about political issues of the day (and we know there were and still are many).  Jim was also not reticent in discussing his health issues and treatments he was undergoing, but that NEVER stopped him with doing what needed to be done to keep the trains running at the garden, like getting on a ladder to fix our couple of trains on overhead tracks, or kneeling to replace an errant train car or two that went off the tracks, or solving electrical issues that needed to be corrected in order to run the trains .  He had become, if you will, my "mentor" in learning the ropes at the railroad garden, and what a superb mentor and person he was in doing so!  This was characterized by his "softness" in approach in handling issues and resolving them, even his positive outlook on life and family members of which he spoke so fondly and lovingly, again despite knowing his health issues.  But more importantly, perhaps---and while the passing of any loved one is a shock, a tragedy, a deep loss---what Jim left us was a legacy that each one of us could only admire and strive for while on tera firma.  While time has a way to heal the loss of a loved one in many respects, it certainly will not dull the memories of Jim because they have now been cemented for eternity.  Rest in peace my good friend...

It is with great sadness that we will no longer enjoy Jim's presence at the art fairs all summer long.
Every couple of years Jim and Marion would join us in Door County for a week of art and fun.  Again, we will miss the times.
