James Schneider

Jim was born in Chicago on September 2, 1931. He graduated from Senn High School and attended the University of Illinois, where he met the love of his life, Phyllis Jacobs. They were married in October 1953 and began a beautiful journey together that spanned 63 years. Following Jim’s honorable discharge from the United States Army, they made their home in Chicago, where they built a loving family.

Jim and Phyllis were devoted parents to their three sons: Mark (Michelle), Gregg (Rita), and Neal (Stacey). The family enjoyed 15 wonderful years living in Birmingham, Alabama, before returning to Chicago in 1976. Upon his return, Jim became a member of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, where he enjoyed a successful career and formed many lasting friendships.

Jim was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Phyllis; his parents, Sidney and Annette (Olshansky) Schneider; and his dear sister, Francine Elkins (Richard).

He was the adored grandfather of Steve (Lindsey), Andrew (Jaclyn), Scott (Lauren), Anna (Ben Detzner), Daniel (Jenny), Bradley (Lexi), Matthew (Katie Abbott), Jared (Dixxie), Benjamin (Joie), and Joel (Natalia). Nothing brought Jim greater joy than his family, and he was especially proud to be the great-grandfather of eighteen cherished great-grandchildren.

Jim was also a beloved uncle, great-uncle, and great-great-uncle to many nieces and nephews, all of whom will remember his kindness, warmth, and unwavering love for family. Jim was fortunate enough to have a wonderful friendship these last few years with Judy Mikelberg.

The Schneider family extends its deepest gratitude to Charlie Jocoman and Jeph Burata, Cleigh, CJ and Krystyna for the exceptional compassion, friendship, and devoted care they provided to Jim. Their kindness brought comfort not only to him but to the entire family.

Jim will be remembered for his quiet strength, steadfast devotion to his family, and the love and generosity that touched everyone fortunate enough to know him. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished and the countless memories they will hold close forever.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution in Jim’s honor may be made to Congregation Beth Shalom, JCFS or FIDF.
