It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Jeffrey Bruce Charkow, who passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home on May 6th. Jeff was an extraordinary father, friend, attorney, tennis player, whiskey enthusiast, food lover, partner, son, brother, uncle, and so much more to all who knew and loved him. He lived with courage, authenticity, and an unmistakable spirit that was entirely his own.
Jeff attended the University of Wisconsin–Madison for his undergraduate studies and remained a devoted Badger fan throughout his life, proudly holding season tickets for many years. He later earned his law degree from Washington University School of Law, beginning a distinguished legal career marked by intelligence, dedication, and remarkable skill.
As an attorney, Jeff was fiercely committed, deeply knowledgeable, and truly passionate about his work — one of the rare individuals who genuinely loved what he did every day. He was a formidable litigator who thrived in the courtroom, possessing an unmatched ability to argue persuasively and advocate tirelessly for his clients. His career took him to many remarkable places, and he especially cherished the extended time he spent in Hawaii, a place he dreamed of one day calling home, despite his family’s insistence that he could never move too far away.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Jeff was beloved for his warmth, charisma, and gift for connection. He could strike up a conversation with anyone and turn strangers into lifelong friends within moments. The friendships he built endured across every chapter of his life, and he remained close with friends from childhood through his final days.
Above all else, Jeff’s greatest love was his family, especially his children, of whom he was immensely proud. He is survived by his three children — Sophie, Ben, and Lily — who were the center of his world. Jeff was a devoted and loving father who never missed an opportunity to express his pride, encouragement, and unconditional love for them.
He also shared a deep and enduring bond with his sister, nieces and nephews, and extended family, and he treasured his parents throughout his life. The love he had for his family was unwavering.
Jeff also embraced life’s simple pleasures with enthusiasm and joy. He was a passionate whiskey enthusiast with an impressive collection, an avid pickleball and tennis player, and someone who treasured evenings spent with friends — whether enjoying Chicago’s finest restaurants, sharing drinks at home, listening to music, or barbequing with his beloved smoker.
Jeff lived fully, loved deeply, and left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him. His passion for life, devotion to his family and friends, and unwavering dedication to his career will continue to inspire and live on in his memory.
