Beloved wife of Wilson, she was the loving mother of Lisa (David) Wegrzyn and Paul (Ashti Doobay-Persaud) and grandmother of Bryce, Gianna, Mia, Nishan and Zaiyan.
Daughter of the late Marjorie and Art Gilbert, Joan was the amazing sister to Diane (Barry z’l) Shapiro and Jerry (Pam) Gilbert and the cherished aunt of 18.
Born in Chicago, Joan was a long-time resident of Highland Park and spent a career as an educator focusing on helping students with challenges. She spent many years working with the deaf and hard-of-hearing in Waukegan where she was the grievance chair of AFT-504. A true humanitarian, she supported countless charities and mentored cancer patients through Imerman Angels.
The memorial service will be held on Monday, December 31st at 11:00am at Temple Beth El (3610 Dundee Rd. Northbrook, IL 60062).
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society and Imerman Angels.
