Leo Seymour Pitrack of Northbrook, Illinois, passed away on October 24, 2026, at the age of 103. He was born on September 30, 1923, in Chicago, Illinois, to Nathan and Lillian Pitrack, and grew up alongside his sisters, Shirley (Cohen) and Etty (Bender).
During World War II, Leo enlisted in the United States Navy. After training at Naval Training Station Farragut, Idaho, he served aboard the light cruiser USS Raleigh and then as a Hospital Apprentice Second Class at the U.S. Naval Hospitals in Balboa, Panama Canal Zone, and Jacksonville, Florida. He was honorably discharged on May 19, 1945, with his service rated excellent, and returned home to Chicago.
After the war, Leo married Shirley Rosenberg in 1946. From the 1950s through the late 1970s, they co-owned and operated Leon’s, a beauty salon on Green Bay Road in Kenilworth. They loved working together and became close friends with many of the clients they served in the community. Leo and Shirly introduced one such client, Deborah, to their eldest son, Howard, and soon thereafter the two married.
Leo and Shirley retired to Boca Raton, Florida, in the 1980s and remained there until Shirley’s passing in 2001. Leo then returned to the Chicago area to be closer to family. Leo will be remembered for his dedication to his family and faith. The sacrifices he made for his family will never be forgotten.
Leo was the beloved husband of the late Shirley (née Rosenberg) Pitrack; loving father of the late Howard (Deborah), Norman, and Judy; cherished grandfather of Danny, Justin, Jacqueline, Ryan, Erika, Matthew, and Jeremy; adoring great-grandfather of Logan, Stevie, Greyson, and Luca; and dear brother of the late Shirley Cohen and Etty Bender.
Leo will be laid to rest at a graveside service on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, at 10 a.m., at Memorial Park Cemetery, 9900 Gross Point Road, Skokie, Illinois.
