Dear Martie,
You met each of us exactly where we were as individuals.
You held our hands and guided us to exactly where we needed to go.
You believed in our ability to live up to your exacting standards.
You helped us to understand and interpret an ambiguous law exactly as it was intended.
You taught us how schools should provide students with exactly what they deserved.
You were exactly who we needed exactly when we needed you.
You were exactly you.
And that means so much to me.

I worked with Martie at Loyola University Chicago and was here when she started. Over the years, we developed a special relationship as I always heard stories about Meredith and Noah. Plus we always talked about what was happening in the School of Education. I saw her in July and felt that she was doing better. I am so sorry to hear of her passing. I pray strength for her loved ones. Rest in Heaven and Peace, Martie!

I was lucky enough to meet Martie when she and Reed applied to adopt my sweet foster dog Tobby. I was in tears reading their application because it was so perfect for him and I could just tell how amazing they both were. I’m eternally grateful to Martie and Reed for opening their home and hearts to my sweet boy and seeing past his quirks. Martie will be missed beyond measure.

I was so honored to work alongside Martie for 10 years. I really admire people who have impeccable integrity and who can speak truth to power and Martie had both traits in spades. When I came to Loyola, she went out of her way to help me and be supportive and continued to do so throughout our time together as faculty. I know so many students whose lives she positively impacted. I so admire Martie and miss her.
