Mary Sue Hanlon Klotz was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, the first daughter of a nurse and a pharmacist. This no doubt had influence on her decision to pursue a career in science. She received a Masters in chemistry from Louisiana State and a PhD in biochemistry from University of California, Berkeley, a rare accomplishment for a woman in that era. This led her to U of I Chicago Medical School and a distinguished 30 year career as a researcher and teacher, where she was able to influence the lives and careers of several generations of students.
In her retirement she returned to the clarinet, which she had played in high school and college marching band, with the New Horizons Music Association.
Sue married Irving M. Klotz in 1967, and together they had one son. Her husband Irving passed away in 2005. She is survived by her son David, her sister Camille, and step children Edward and Audie.
A graveside service for Mary will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday August 17, 2026, at Shalom Memorial Park Cemetery, 1700 W Rand Rd, Arlington Heights, IL 60004.
