Peter August Weyrens was born on February 17, 1984 in Cleveland, Ohio, the firstborn son of Francis James Weyrens and Katherine (Gwinn) Weyrens. His brother David was born in 1986, and in 1987 the family moved to Kohler, Wisconsin. After 5 years in Kohler and a year in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the family settled in Topeka, Kansas in 1994. Peter took his school work seriously, even in middle school. At Topeka High School he played trumpet in the band and ran track and cross country. He graduated from THS with distinction. Major trips during his youth were to Israel, Alaska, New Zealand, the Grand Canyon, and the Boundary Waters. After high school he attended Dartmouth College where he rowed on the 8-man crew team and formed some deep and lasting friendships. He graduated from Dartmouth in 2006(7) with a double major in Government Studies and English. In 2005 his brother died at age 19 in a car accident and that loss was a sadness that Peter carried for the rest of his life. After college he worked in Washington DC for a consulting firm for a time, and then earned an MBA at the Kellogg Business School at Northwestern University in Chicago in 2012. He worked for Bank of America/ Merrill Lynch from 2012-2017, initially on Wall Street in Manhattan, NY and then in Sydney, Australia. He loved his time in Sydney, especially going for long bike rides, playing golf, and swimming at Bondi beach. In 2017 he took a new job in Denver, Colorado in financial consulting. in 2018 his life became much more difficult when he developed a seizure disorder. This might have been the result of brain scarring from an infection as a toddler in Cleveland. The seizures were frequent, completely without warning, and violent, with multiple concussions, scalp lacerations, and hospital admissions. They were not controlled with medication. He could not work and became withdrawn and depressed. These circumstances persisted until 2022 when he moved from Denver to Wilmette, Illinois, a northern suburb of Chicago. He came under the care of an epilepsy specialist who started effective medications for his seizures and a cardiologist who definitively diagnosed and treated a co-existent genetic heart condition. From month to month his health, confidence, and joy improved. He started his own business in finance. He enjoyed being a part of the Wilmette community. He was looking forward to a full life. Then he had another seizure - his first in a year, and died from head trauma. He was a courageous, kind, observant, and generous man. He will be deeply missed.
A memorial service will be held at Fellowship Bible Church at 10th and Urish in Topeka, KS on Friday, February 17th at 10:00 AM. The family will be at the church for visitation from 9:00 - 9:45.
