I was so sad to learn of Mr. G's passing yesterday from my former co-editor, Phil Walzer. He had such a profound influence on my life and career path: he was a teacher who inspired me to love language and build my vocabulary, a journalism advisor who expected us to seek the truth and have integrity, a trusted adult/father figure when I needed one, and a lifelong mentor and friend. I am thankful that in our last conversation about a year ago, I had the chance to remind him (again) how grateful I was to have him in my life and how much I treasured our lasting friendship. Thank you, Lisa, Sarah and Rachel for sharing your father with me and all the other students he was so devoted to.

My deepest condolences to the entire family. Bob was my journalism and English teacher at James Madison HS in the early 1970s. He was also the faculty adviser of the school newspaper, of which I was the editor. He taught me how to write clearly, think critically, and fold the NY Times so it could be read on the subway (and I still use some of those skills today). More important, he taught me how to be a good person. He will be much missed.
