Steve was born in Chicago in 1942, to Dr. Curt and Beate Alsberg, German Jewish immigrants who fled the Nazi uprising in 1937. He grew up on Glenwood Avenue and later on Estes Avenue in Rogers Park and graduated from Chicago’s Sullivan High School in 1960. Steve received his Bachelor's degree in Philosophy from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, and went on to receive a Masters degree in Teaching from the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana. It was there that he met and fell in love with Linda Weil, also a child of German Jewish immigrants. Steve and Linda were married in June, 1966. Happily married for nearly 55 years, Steve stayed by Linda’s side at every moment until her passing in 2021 due to complications from Multiple Sclerosis.
A teacher at Highland Park High School for nearly 40 years, Steve pioneered the student-run local cable TV show “Giants in Action.” Steve also maintained a lifelong fascination with historic periodicals, paper ephemera about President Lincoln, the Civil War, and Chicago history during the 1800s. He founded the company Historical Newspapers and Journals with Linda as a vehicle to purchase and sell his discoveries, and was widely known as an expert in his field.
In addition to his parents, Steve was preceded in death by Linda and his older brother Frank. He is survived by his two sons, Josh (Jessica) of Portland, Oregon, and Noah (Chelsea) of Evanston, and three grandsons Brandon, Griffin and Quentin.
A private burial was held at New Light Cemetery in Lincolnwood. In lieu of flowers, please consider sending donations to the Multiple Sclerosis Society at https://www.nationalmssociety.org/.
