Beloved husband of Susan (née Schultz); loving father of Gregory (Leah) Gistenson, Rebecca (David) Propen, and Sarah (Mark) Levy; adored grandfather of Raya, Jordan, Isaac, Benjamin, Orli, Noa, Julian, and Kira; cherished son of the late Henry and Joan (née Bartfeld) Gistenson; dear brother of Holly (Larry) Goldsmith, Dan Gistenson, and Lisa Gistenson; son-in-law of Richard and Barbara (née Sugarman) Schultz; brother-in-law of Lori Schultz and Diana (Barry) Pasikov; fond uncle to Julie, Cheryl, Eliana, Sam, Aspen, and Levi; and a dear cousin and friend to many.
Steve was a practicing trial lawyer and cherished partner for 40 years at the Chicago firms of Foran, Wiss & Schultz; Schwartz Cooper; and Dykema Gossett. He was known for his thorough trial presentation and for his warmth, winning over the hearts and minds of judges and juries on behalf of business owners and corporations large and small. His legacy endures through the careers of the trial lawyers he mentored and the opposing counsel who became more formidable advocates by practicing against him.
An avid outdoorsman, Steve was a dedicated supporter of the Max McGraw Wildlife Foundation. His passions included sporting clays, skiing, scuba diving, hiking, and horseback riding. Steve enjoyed traveling with his wife, Susie, and realized his lifelong dream of purchasing the family boat on Lake Geneva only a short time before learning of his illness. Beyond his many adventures, his true passion remained his unwavering dedication to his wife, children, and grandchildren. He took immense pride in their every accomplishment and found his greatest joy in their company.
