Steven I. Levinson, age 83, died peacefully in his home on February 11, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband for 54 years of Ann (nee Shapiro), devoted father of Aaron Levinson and Rachel (Danny) Fisher, adoring grandfather of Jacob, Eli, and Ilana Fisher and Maia and Naomi Levinson, devoted son of the late Nathan and Betty Levinson, and dear brother of the late Francine Rosenberg and Eileen Zucker.
Steven grew up in the West Rogers Park neighborhood of Chicago and attended Sullivan High School. He worked all four years to put himself through college, beginning at the Navy Pier campus of the University of Illinois and finishing his degree in Accounting at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He began as a CPA at Price Waterhouse in Chicago and was a partner at Michael Silver & Company for the majority of his long career. Even after retirement, he continued to work on the tax returns of private clients as recently as last year and had plans to continue this year.
Steven was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in 1950 at age 9. He was given a 10-15 year life expectancy at the time, and he beat all odds against that. He was a remarkable inspiration to thousands of other Type 1 Diabetics and a true example of success, living a beautifully full life with the disease. He was one of fewer than 175 people who had ever lived 75 years after diagnosis.
Steven and Ann were founding members of Moriah Congregation in Deerfield, where Steven served as an executive board member and president in the 1990s. Steven and Ann raised their children Aaron and Rachel in a home that placed a high priority on Judaism, music, and a love of learning. Steven was so proud of Ann’s education and teaching career, and they both supported Aaron and Rachel in pursuit of their own passions, careers, and families. But above all, Steven’s five grandchildren were the absolute pride and joy of his life. He relished every minute with them, from playing Gin Rummy to seeing their artwork to hearing their hilarious stories to watching every concert they gave. He is deeply missed and loved by his friends and family.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 14, 2025, 10:00 AM at Weinstein & Piser Funeral Home, 111 Skokie Blvd, Wilmette, IL 60091. Interment will follow at Shalom Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (breakthrought1d.org) or Moriah Congregation (moriahcong.org).
