Susan graduated from Radcliffe College in 1948. She was a woman of many talents and diverse passions. Her professional journey included serving as the Director of Alumni Relations at the J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University. She also dedicated her expertise as the coordinator of Internships for the Business-Economics Program at Barat College in Lake Forest, IL.
For a decade, Susan volunteered as an election judge and actively participated in various political organizations. Her commitment to education extended into many aspects of her life, as she dedicated time to tutoring children in reading at the Evanston grade school as well as tutoring international students from Northwestern University who wanted to enhance their English language skills.
Outside of her career, Susan found joy in music and played the piano. She never passed up a good musical or play.
Susan’s family meant everything to her.
Her son Doug says, “Mom was game for anything from a cross-country ski in a Colorado blizzard to a backpacking trip in the Snowy Range of Wyoming!”
Daughter Betsy says, “We went to the library once a week, mom would get 7 books. One time Dad didn’t believe she read them all, so, he read one and quizzed her! Of course, she knew the whole story!”
Grandson Chez says, “My fondest childhood memory was visiting solo and playing Monopoly, Gin Rummy, and other games to keep me busy. She always had sour cream & onion chips!”
Granddaughter Molly remembers, “I loved listening to Grandmother talk; she was a captivating storyteller. They always revealed how well educated, traveled, and read she was, and her strong options always added a spark to every conversation.”
Susan is survived by her children, Douglas Beyer and his wife, Maureen; Elizabeth "Betsy" Beyer and her husband, John Lucey; as well as her grandchildren, Cameron Beyer, Molly Beyer and her husband, Ben Bloss, Francesco DeNardis and his fiancée, Alexis Torres, Susannah Martinez and her husband, Joseph, John Lucey and his wife, Christina.
She is also survived by 3 great-grandchildren, Mackenzie and Miles Martinez and John Lucey.
She was preceded in death by her son, Gordon Beyer, her sisters, Harriet Newton and Annette Frey, and her niece, S. Gabrielle Frye.
