May 23, 1936 – June 28, 2026
Dr. Suzan Habib Selim Younes, lovingly known as “Suzie” and “Mimi,” passed away peacefully on June 28, 2026, surrounded by loved ones in Northbrook, Illinois. She was 90 years old.
She is the proud and loving mother of David (Deborah) Maleh; sister of Nadia (Albert) Eskinazi and Laila (Maurice) Joseph; grandmother of 3 grandchildren, Derek (Alex) Maleh, Drake (Avalee) Maleh, and Dahlia Maleh; and great-grandmother of Elliot Maleh.
Suzan was born on May 23, 1936, in Tanta, Egypt, to her parents, Habib and Louna Younes. She was one of six children with her beloved siblings: Selim, Nelle, Younes, Laila, and Nadia.
Forced to leave Egypt, Suzan came to the United States with her son, David, in 1966. As a single mother and immigrant, she worked tirelessly to build a new life for herself, her family and the generations to come.
Suzan graduated from Ain Shams University Faculty of Medicine in 1958 and became board certified in the United States in 1967. She went on to build an extraordinary 40-year career as a cardiac anesthesiologist in Chicago where she devoted herself to medicine and the care of others. She served as Head of Anesthesiology at Lutheran General Hospital where she is credited with establishing the cardiac anesthesiology program.
Suzan celebrated life fully. She traveled the world with her sister Nadia (Albert) and lived with a fierce independence that knew no limits. Her greatest love, however, was her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchild, who were her everything. To the very end, she remained strong and unwavering in her faith.
Her family will remember her for the love she gave, the truth she spoke, and the strength she carried through every chapter of her life. She leaves behind a legacy of perseverance and fearless love.
