Dorothy Herrera

Age 84, born in San Fidel, New Mexico on February 19, 1930 passed away July 9, 2014 peacefully from illness at her home in Wilmington, CA. Dorothy is the daughter of Jose S. Gonzales and Lucia Velasquez, beloved mother of Tommy Herrera, Linda Herrera-Landeros, Sylvia Herrera Alvarez, Toni Herrera Alvarez, Dottie Herrera-Cocca, Joe Herrera, proud grandmother and great-grandmother of 39 children; She is now in peace re-united with her beloved husband Frank G Herrera, her Sister Josefina Gonzales and two brothers Bernard Gonzales, and Joe Gonzales.

Dorothy studied Botany at Harbor College and a life time member of the South Coast Botanical Gardens. She also volunteered at Rain Forest and was a member of the bromeliad society. Her love of plants was only a fraction of her interest, her love for family and community was most important. Dorothy dedicated her time volunteering for the Boys and Girls club of Wilmington and launched the Food Bank program for the needy.

Visitation will be Sunday July 20, 2014 from 5:00pm to 9:00pm, with a Vigil Service at 7:00pm at Funeraria del Angel McNerney’s Mortuary -1640 N. Avalon Blvd. in Wilmington. Her Funeral Mass will be held on Monday July 21, 2014 at 10:00am in St. Peter & St. Paul Catholic Church-515 W. Opp St. in Wilmington with burial to follow at Wilmington Cemetery -605 East O Street in Wilmington.
