Our beloved passed at the age of 76. He was surrounded with family at the time of his passing and throughout his life. Ramon resided in Carson, California. He passed in the evening at USC Keck Hospital in the city of Boyle Heights after a strong fight with pancreatitis and other complications. As he would say, his kidneys belonged to UCLA but his heart was with USC. He fought the good fight and we appreciate all of the love and support provided not only by their staff but also all of your prayers.
Ramon, also known as Ray to many, was born at the Maternity Cottage in Long Beach, California into a loving family who were excited to receive him. He is preceded by his parents Manuel and Basilisa Madrigal and his siblings Anita Lopatinsky, Manuel and Gloria Madrigal. He is survived by his beautiful wife Marina Madrigal, daughters Melissa Madrigal Lopez and Marcella Madrigal, and the apple of his eye, his granddaughter Malaina Lopez.
Ray went to school in Wilmington and graduated from Phineas Banning High School in 1966 as a proud pilot. He attended Los Angeles Harbor College and received his Bachelor’s degree from California State University Dominguez Hills in Sociology. He studied for his Public Administration Master’s degree at the University of Southern California. His degree is only a dissertation away!
As he began his career of service, many will remember him coaching youth at the Mahar House to becoming the Executive Director of Harbor Community Development Corporation. H.C.D.C. was dedicated to assisting the Harbor Area with a local teen center, handyman assistance for senior citizens, Pony baseball program and more. He and his team received many awards and recognition for their longtime community service and as upstanding leaders for the people.
After retiring in 2015, Ray spent time with family and friends, such as watching his nephews play baseball. He was excited to attend the upcoming Ice Cube Bobble Head night at Dodger Stadium to celebrate him & Marina’s 56th wedding anniversary. Spending time at home working around the house is also where you could often find him.
Ray enjoyed 14 years as Chairman of the Carson planning commission as well as his time spent as a member of Holy Family Church in his hometown Wilmington, California where he grew up and was married. We will miss him dearly.
