Alice James Grainger

Alice James Grainger, a native of Wilmington, NC who was born on April 30, 1919, died on March 26, 2012. Mrs. Grainger was the daughter of the late John Haughton and Isabel Clark James. She was predeceased by her husband of 65 years Thomas Burbank Grainger. She was also predeceased by her brother William Clark James and her sister Isabel James Lehto. Mrs. Grainger attended New Hanover High School in Wilmington, St. Mary's in Raleigh and Kingsmith in Washington, DC. She married Mr. Grainger in 1940 and after World War II moved to Tarboro, NC. She was active in the Altar Guild at Calvary Episcopal Church as well as the National Society of the Colonial Dames in the state of North Carolina. After Mr. Grainger retired, he and Mrs. Grainger returned to Wilmington where she continued being active in the Colonial Dames and the Ministering Circle. Mrs. Grainger had a passion for gardening and interior decorating. She adored entertaining friends and family. She is survived by her two daughters, Jean Cameron Grainger of New York City and Janet Grainger Corcoran Mickey of New Bern, three granddaughters, Nancy Corcoran Thuringer Jason of New Bern, Mary Duffy Corcoran Keeter of Greenville, and Alice Corcoran Culpepper of Wilmington, three great grandchildren, Zachery Thuringer, Thomas Keeter, and Isabel Culpepper, and her wonderful caregiver, Connie Pierce, who cared for her for the past seven years. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 5 to 7 pm at the home, 1820 S. Live Oak Parkway. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Thursday, March 29, 2012 at St. James Church with the Rev. Ronald G. Abrams officiating. Interment will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alice James Grainger Garden at the Cameron Art Museum, the National Society of the Colonial Dames in the state of North Carolina, or the Ministering Circle.
