Betty Sue Baker

Betty Sue Baker, age 90, wife of the late Kinney D. Baker and a longtime resident of Carolina Beach, NC, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of November 20, 2024. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Kate Driggers, and 6 siblings.  

Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Joyce Baker Thornton; her son Bill Baker (Betty); her daughter Cindy Baker Douglas (Bobby);  grandson Chad Thornton;  granddaughter Dallas Baker Hairr (Cody); great grandchildren Ayden and Rylee Thornton and Georgia Hairr; and  “grand god-daughters” Amie and Amaya Sanneh.   She is also survived by brothers Buster Driggers (Betty) and Mike Driggers along with many nephews and nieces.

Betty proudly worked for 17 years at New Hanover Memorial Hospital, where she met lifelong friend Kerry Webster.  She was known by co-workers, family and friends to have a large personality that no one ever forgot!  She was famous for her witty Southern sayings and her colorful language!  She loved her family and friends; her flowers; watching Westerns on TV and always looked forward to attending St. Paul’s United Methodist Church.

The family would like to thank Charmaine Johnson, the God’s Girls caregiving team and Lower Cape Fear LifeCare’s in-home staff who provided Betty with loving and compassionate care that enabled her  to remain at home as long as possible.  The family also expresses sincere gratitude to the staff of the Lower Cape Fear LifeCare Center for the thoughtful and compassionate care provided during the last week of Betty’s long life.  

A graveside service will be held at Greenlawn Memorial Park (1311 Shipyard Blvd; Wilmington, NC, 28412) at 11:00 am on Tuesday, November 26.  The funeral will follow at 2:00 pm at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 300 Harper Ave., Carolina Beach, NC  28428.  

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Betty’s memory may be made to Lower Cape Fear LifeCare at 1414 Physicians Dr., Wilmington, NC  28401 or to the building fund at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 300 Harper Ave., Carolina Beach, NC  28428.
