

Betty was born September 18, 1928, in Wilmington, NC, as the remnants of the Okeechobee Hurricane passed through the Cape Fear region. She was the youngest child of George William and Daisy Spooner Melton and was a 1946 graduate of New Hanover High School.
During her lifetime, Betty had several occupations including homemaker, secretary, bookkeeper, seamstress and dress designer. As a dress designer, she designed and made many gowns and costumes for pageant contestants, brides, and bridesmaids. For over a decade, she was involved in providing the coronation gowns for the NC Azalea Festival Queens.
Betty was a life-long resident of the Masonboro Sound community and was a life-long member of Masonboro Baptist Church where she served in numerous leadership positions including Director of the Woman’s Missionary Union, Chairman of the Kitchen Committee, Director of Vacation Bible School, Church Secretary, Church Financial Secretary, organizer of the Church Christmas Party (for more than 60 years), Chair and Co-Chair of the Bereavement Committee and Sunday School Teacher (for more than 70 years, having retired in September 2021 as the teacher of the Betty Mahn Sunday School Class).
In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years Morris Dupree “Doc” Mahn, her brothers, George William, Jr., Herbert Franklin, and Luther Allen, and her sisters, Mabel Farrow, Bessie Farrow, Susie Brock, and Kathleen Garris.
She is survived by her daughter, Emma, and sons, Daniel, and Joseph (wife, Karen); grandchildren Christopher (wife, Isabelle), Katie, Nathan, and Emily; step-great-granddaughter Jolie VanHoose; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held in the Masonboro Baptist Church Activity Center on Friday evening, December 17 from 6-8 pm. The funeral service will be at 2 pm on Saturday, December 18 at Masonboro Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Masonboro Baptist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Masonboro Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 1501 Beasley Road, Wilmington, NC 28409 or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN.
