Carl was born on July 27, 1943, in Wilmington, NC, to the late Lawrence Hiatt, Sr. and Elsie Bellamy
Jones Hiatt. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, James Lawrence Hiatt, Jr. (Larry), and his aunt, Mildred (Billie) Jones.
Carl is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Vickie Thomas Hiatt, his son, Thomas Carl Hiatt, a sister-in-law, Sandra Corbett Hiatt, and a nephew, Lawrence Hiatt, as well as a host of friends and family.
Carl was a member of the New Hanover High School Class of 1961. He was a graduate of Montreat Junior College and Elon College, with a degree in History. He taught History and coached basketball and high school football in Denton, NC. After several years, he had an opportunity to return to his hometown to teach and coach at Cape Fear Academy. He so enjoyed working with young people. He also spent time in insurance business and other sales. His love and knowledge of fishing and boats led him to work for Atlantic Marine, where he happily remained for over 30 years.
His other passions were hunting and collecting decoys. Even more than the hunt, Carl cherished the friendships he made thru the years. He especially enjoyed spending time with young hunters, helping them to develop a love and respect for the sport and nature. As many of his friends will attest, Carl was also quite a storyteller, and these interests were the source of many of his stories, which he loved to tell at any given opportunity.
Carl was a lifetime member of the Carolina Yacht Club, where he also served as a lifeguard during his earlier years. He was a member of the Lutheran Church of Reconciliation.
A Celebration of Carl's Life will be held at 2:00, Thursday, November 10, 2022, at Oakdale Cemetery (520 N 15th Street in Wilmington, NC.), followed by visitation with the family.
