Charles "Bob" Freeman

On January 12, 2023, at the age of 80 years old, Charles “Bob” Freeman peacefully left for his Heavenly home, where we can only assume his wife, Sandy, met him at the gates saying, “What took you so long?” 

Bob, affectionately known as Papa by his family, was born August 31, 1942 in Spartanburg, SC to Howard Lewis Freeman and Ora Faye Crocker Freeman.  He married the love of his life, Sandra, in 1963 and they spent the next 57 years living life beside each other and watching their family grow. Bob enjoyed traveling with his wife; they visited all 50 states together. He worked as a supervisor at Cape Industries for many years before retiring in 1997 and living the retired man’s dream, frequenting the pool hall, bowling alley, and golf course (making two hole-in-ones during his lifetime!)

Bob was a man of few words, which gave him his stable presence and his solid wisdom. When he did speak, you wanted to listen. His words and his stories were heartfelt and intentional. He loved to joke, was quick with playful sarcasm, and was always desiring to make his own path and go against the grain. He will be remembered by his family, friends, and neighbors as a loving man with a quiet steady compassion and a genuine soul. 

Bob is preceded in death by his wife, Sandra Johnson Freeman, and two infant sons, Robert Freeman and Kevin Freeman. He is survived by two children and their spouses, Robin Freeman Jones (Roger) of Hampstead NC, and Steven Howard Freeman (Lisa) of Colonial Heights, VA; his four grandchildren, Caitlin Kuperus (Jesse), Hilary Steinkamp (Michael), Berkeley Freeman Turner (Ian) and Kevin Freeman; and his four great-grandchildren, Jones Kuperus, Avett Kuperus, Abraham Steinkamp, and Elizabeth Steinkamp. 

Visitation will be held Monday, January 16, 2023 at 10:00 AM at Andrews Mortuary, 17730 Hwy 17, Hampstead, NC. 

A funeral service officiated by Bob’s son, Rev. Steve Freeman, will be held Monday, January 16, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Andrews Mortuary in Hampstead. Burial will follow in Sea Lawn Memorial Park.
