Charles Finlay Brewer

He was born in Bridgeport, CT to the late Charles A.  and Jean (Duff) Brewer.  He is preceded in death by his wife of 59 years Sue (Woodmansee) Brewer.  Charles is survived by his sister Margaret M. Stevens of Yarmouth, ME and his 5 children; Charles D.  Brewer and wife Julie of Wilmington, NC, Amy A. Brewer of Memphis, TN, Gordon D. Brewer and wife Melissa of Jacksonville, NC, Polly-Jean B. Winkelvoss and husband Gary of Cranberry Township, PA and Lesley P. Mattson and husband Scott of Lake Stevens, WA.  Charles is also survived by 9 grandchildren; Erin, Chase, Matthew, Andrew, Austin, Molly, Rachel, Lydia, Tristan and 2 great granddaughters Rosaline and Violet. 

After graduating from Bassick High School in Bridgeport, CT in 1942 he studied at the Pratt Institute in Bellaire, NY after which he joined the Merchant Marines in 1943.  Charles went on to complete a BA in Chemistry and Math from UConn, Storrs in 1952.  He was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa during his time at UConn. 

After graduating Charles served in the US Army in the Korean Conflict as a Medical Lab Technician until 1954.  Charles went on to earn a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering from Speed Scientific School in 1955.

His professional career with the General Electric Company began in the fall of 1955.  His employment sent him all over the country where he and Sue made homes in KY, OH, MA, PA, NC, and WA.   He retired from GE after 39 years of service in 1994. 

While in NY and NC Charles was actively involved with the Boy Scouts of America, as a Scout Master, and district commissioner.

Upon retirement Charles and Sue moved to Winchester, VA where they greatly loved and were very active with First Presbyterian Church.  One of the highlights of Charles’ time with the church was his mission trip to Methtu, Ethiopia. 

He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who will be very deeply and dearly missed.  Interment will be in Storrs, CT.
