
Daniel Jasper Black, Jr., known affectionately to those who loved him as “DJ,” passed away on April 25, 2026. Born December 11,1936, in Wilmington, North Carolina, he was the son of Daniel Jasper Black and Catherine Barber Black (both deceased).
Daniel was educated in Wilmington, attending New Hanover High School before going on to study at NC State University and the University of North Carolina Wilmington. He built a distinguished career working for Atlantic Coastline Railroad and later General Electric in Wilmington, where he was known for his dedication and hard work.
He was happily married for 52 years to the love of his life, Mary Ellen Hunnicutt Black. A gifted musician, Daniel played the saxophone and took great joy in performing with Duke Ladd and other musical groups throughout his life — a passion for music that he passed on to those around him. In retirement, he embraced his love of travel, visiting numerous countries alongside cherished friends and making memories that spanned the globe.
Daniel is survived by his three sons: Danny (Deborah) of Tennessee, David (Jan) of Las Vegas, and Kevin (Jennifer) of Louisville, Kentucky; grandson Brady; and granddaughter Abigail Black. He is also survived by his sisters Cecelia (R.E.) Corbett and Barbara (Doug) Curtis, and was preceded in death by Betty (Jim) Anderson.
A graveside service will be held in Oakdale Cemetery at a time and date to be announced.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Andrew’s Covenant Presbyterian Church.
