David Lawrence Weaver, age 72, of Rocky Point, North Carolina, formerly of Wilmington and Cary, North Carolina, died peacefully on Friday, July 16, 2021, at Lower Cape Fear LifeCare.
David was born to Ann Alice Colella Weaver and Thomas George Weaver on August 30, 1948 in New Britain, CT. His family moved to Cary, NC in the mid-1950’s and David graduated from Cary High School. David began working in odd jobs as a child at Cary Oil, a company owned by his neighbor, and joined them in 1966, retiring in 2000 as Vice President. During these years, David was active as a volunteer fireman and ultimately served as fire chief for the Town of Cary volunteer fire department. He also served on the planning commission when Cary’s first planned unit development was approved. Following retirement from Cary Oil, David joined South Carolina-based Dearybury Oil in 2001 and retired in 2019 to enjoy life on his much-loved Lucky Dog Farm. A much-respected figure in the oil and gas business in the Carolinas, David was consistently recognized for his fair prices and outstanding service.
In 1990, David married Jo Simmons and became, in David’s words, “The luckiest dog in the world.” Throughout their 31-year marriage they enjoyed many happy trips, countless gourmet meals, and the unending joy of each other’s company. David was a constant supporter of all of Jo’s projects and Jo saw to David’s every need. In Jo’s words, they lived large.
David was predeceased by his parents, Ann and Thomas Weaver. He is survived by his wife Jo Simmons Weaver; his sister and brother-in-law Judy and Clark Garrett of Cary, NC; his mother-in-law Betty Simmons Molavi; sister-in-law Beth Sturdy; special niece Brook Sturdy Wynot and her husband Andrew and daughter Ava of Holly Springs, NC; three nephews; and his beloved terrier, Sally.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 24 at 2:00 at Andrews Mortuary and Crematory, 1617 Market Street, Wilmington, NC.
Memorial gifts may be made to Coastal Therapeutic Riding Program (a nonprofit therapeutic horse riding program for children), 8120 Sidbury Road, Wilmington, NC 28411 or Lower Cape Fear LifeCare, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC.
