Deborah Price Hockenbury
March 14, 1953 – May 4, 2021
Deborah Price Hockenbury born March 14, 1953 in Wilmington, NC went to be with her Heavenly Father on May 4, 2021. Her legacy lives on in the hearts and minds of the friends and family whose lives she touched so deeply. Deborah was a graduate of James Sprunt Community College with an Associate Degree in Nursing. She worked for many years as a Registered Nurse caring for the sick and injured in nursing homes and at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Her Christian ministry spanned 20 years and included regular weekly services with husband Jay at nursing homes, and at the Rescue Mission. She also organized home prayer meetings and she volunteered at the Wilmington Residential Facility for Women. Deborah loved to travel, and one of her last major trips was to the Holy Land. She enjoyed seeing the sites and locations where our Lord Jesus Christ ministered. Deborah was a devout Christian who never met a stranger. She never missed an opportunity to witness to others through kindness and love. She followed Christ’s great command to “Love the Lord thy God with all your heart, soul, and mind and to love thy neighbor as thyself”. Matthew 22:37-39. Lord, please help us to follow her example.
Deborah had many talents. These talents included beaded jewelry making, needle point, creating handmade corsages, and writing short stories. Of all her talents singing, song writing, playing the piano and playing the guitar were by far her favorites. Over the years, she sang in church choirs and performed solos. She made a professional studio recording titled “Hard Driving Woman" under her stage name, “D.J. Price.” She also recorded a demo of her Christian songs entitled “King of Kings.” Additionally, she performed comedy skits in her comic character, “Miss Debbie" from Atlanta which was always well received.
Deborah’s smile and laughter always filled the room with joy which will truly be missed. She is survived by her loving husband of 44 years, retired Senior Resident Superior Court Judge Jay D. Hockenbury, her daughter Cara Light and husband Timothy, two granddaughters Sierra Britt and husband Nicholas, and Scarlett Owen, two brothers Hank Price and wife Barbara, and Jim Price and wife Jane, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
