Known for her vibrant spirit and unwavering dedication to making a difference in the lives of others, Deborah's impact was felt far and wide. Raised alongside her younger sister, Nancy, Deborah's childhood in Roxboro was filled with love and valuable lessons from her parents. They instilled in her the virtues of kindness, patience, and the importance of learning from life's experiences.
After graduating from Atlantic Christian College with a BA in psychology, Deborah embarked on a lifelong journey of helping others. Her passion for advocacy and support led her to roles as a Social Worker and later as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor Manager with the state of NC. Deborah's commitment went beyond professional duties; she touched countless lives, leaving an indelible mark of kindness and empathy.
In 1984, Deborah found the love of her life, Garrett Kelly, and the two embarked on a journey filled with love, laughter, and shared dreams. They were married on Memorial Day weekend in 1986, creating a bond that stood the test of time. Deborah and Garrett were active members of Grace United Methodist Church in Wilmington, where their shared faith brought them solace and community.
A true friend to many, Deborah's social circle spanned from Roxboro, NC, to Atlantic Christian College to Sanford, NC, and beyond. Whether it was beach trips, college football games, horseback riding in Aruba with her sister Nancy or volunteering at the Azalea Festival for 20 years, Deborah's warmth and generosity created lasting memories for all who were fortunate enough to know her.
Deborah's love for the beach was evident in the countless joyful moments shared with friends, family, and neighbors at Holden Beach. Her ability to connect with people was unparalleled, leaving an enduring legacy of meaningful connections and conversations.
Deborah is survived by her two loving daughters, Kimberly and Traci Lewis, her sister Nancy Wagstaff, brother-in-law Cleve Wagstaff, nephew Chad Wagstaff, nephew-in-law Jason Gammell, great-nephew Jameson Gammell and her constant companion, Addie (her cat).
