Don was born in Emmett, Idaho on August 22,1931, son of Christian Have Thorning and Lillian Brestel Thorning. He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Rachel Thorning of 54 years; daughters, Deborah Stanley and Mary Bonser; son, Chris Thorning.
Don proudly served in the Navy during the Korean Conflict. He worked for over 50 years as an auto mechanic. A long- time member of the Elks Club, Don and Rachel were active members of the RV Club, The Tarv’lin’ Tarheels and enjoyed showing horses, he was involved for many years in 4H.
Don is survived by his son-in-law, James Bonser; 6 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
A Gathering of Family and friends will be held from 12:30pm to 1:30pm on Saturday January 3, 2026 at Coble Funeral and Cremation Service at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 1155 Shipyard Blvd, Wilmington, Nc 28412.
Graveside Service with Military Honors will start at 2:00pm at Oleander Memorial Gardens, 306 Bradley Drive, Wilmington, NC 28409.
