Judy, my sincere condolences on Steve's passing. I was a member of his very first internship class in NJ, and have to say that, although we did not always agree in theory, he had an immense influence on my later career. Dear Judith,    My thoughts and prayers are with you today and hope that you'll know God's peace in your loss.

I first met Steve when I was an intern with the State of New Jersey internship program. Later he trained me to be a supervisor.  During the following years, I saw him at site visits when he visited interns and at seminars and other conferences and training experiences. I will remember him as a smart, kind, gentle, and dedicated man with a passonaite commitment to the well-being of psychology in the State of New Jersey.  I will miss  knowing he is in the background.  I extend my sympathies to his family as they grieve his passing.

I first came to know Steve as the Director of the NJ Psychology Internship Program when I began my psychology career in 1984.  Since that time, he has been a source of professional and personal support for me within the Department of Human Services.  I am inspired by his endless energy and overwhelming dedication to New Jersey psychologists.  I am grateful for all he taught me.      To Judy, Steve's family and friends, and all of Steve's colleagues throughout New Jersey, I express my deepest condolences.      I pray that he has found the peace that he most surely deserves.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Judy and Steve's family. I?ve always been amazed at hearing about Steve?s strength and his incredible will to live in the face of a debilitating illness. I?ve been equally amazed with Judy and her capacity to care for him so lovingly during these difficult years. I have learned much about the strength of the human spirit from both of them.

Steve: I knew you for such a long time and our common histories went back even farther. You were such a good, kind and gentle man with a sharp mind, a great sense of humor and a ready smile. I will never forget you. If you can, please say hello to John Mark Egan.    Chris

We were not fortunate enough to know Dr. Steve early on; we met him when he and his amazing wife Judith decided on our corner of SE North Carolina as a wonderful place to retire. We loved chatting with them; a more interesting couple cannot be found. The house they are building was planned around Steve, keeping in mind his love of looking out at the water. He loved life, he loved his family, he loved his new friends & we all loved him.   We looked forward to visiting him in his new home, seeing that beautiful smile on his face & sharing his happiness in his new surroundings. But the Lord had other plans. Now we picture him in Heaven, moving about free as a bird, smiling that same beautiful smile, surrounded by eager pupils soaking up his lectures & teachings. The entire NJ community of psychologists grieves the loss of this teacher, leader, and giant in the field.

My heart goes out to you, Judy, for your loss. I have witnessed how you have devoted yourself to Steve, despite your own hardship. You have organized your life around caring for him during these past few trying years.  I met Steve in November 1972 when he accepted me into the internship program, then called the New Jersey Department of Institutions and Agencies Psychology Junior Fellowship Program, which encompassed psychiatric hospitals, state prisons, diagnostic facilities, developmental disability centers, community mental health centers, family and child guidance centers, and child and adolescent treatment centers. Interns experienced two six-month placements. I remember Steve's visiting each site, consulting with supervisors, and, in many cases, observing interns administer psychological tests.  Over the years, Steve has been for me a teacher, mentor, and friend. I will miss his kindness, patience, generosity, encouragement, and wisdom. He has had a profound influence on my life.

How enriched my life has been from my longstanding association with Steve and his New Jersey Psychology Internship Program!  It has been an honor and privilege to have worked with Steve, and I will miss him greatly.  Many memories remain -- the 50th Anniversary of the internship program, Steve's 75th birthday celebration, the annual internship picnics at Steve's and Judy's home, and the ongoing bimonthly colloquia and seminars, which Gene and I will keep going, in his memory, as long as we can.

Dear Judy,  Though I can't be present for Steve's Service on Tuesday, please know that my love and prayers surround you. I will always remember the joyful welcome you and Steve extended when we first met, and all the happy occasions we shared thereafter. You have been a dynamic couple whose energy and determination were boundless. I know you will hold the powerful love you shared close to your heart. Be at peace, he has a special place in Heaven. My heartfelt condolences to Dr. Patterson's family, friends and colleagues who will surely miss his passion for psychology, his gentleness, and his vitality.  We accomplished some good work together at DMHS.

We were privileged to have Steve as our friend and to be able to share what are now unforgettable times with Judy and Steve. I got to know Dr. Patterson through the New Jersey Internship Program and attended his Training for Supervisors.  He was so dedicated to the field and truly cared about people and the profession of psychology. My condolences to his family and to all those who knew him.  He will be missed.

This is a great loss.  Stephen was a special person, who guided many to their professional careers.  I am grateful for all he taught me.  My condolences to Judith and all family members.
