Edwin Bennett White, Jr.

Ed White was born on Sunday, September 14, 1919 in Wilmington, NC to Edwin Bennett Sr. and Marie Yopp White. He enjoyed life to the fullest until his death on Friday, February 13, 2015. He was the husband of the late Elmer Lucille White with whom he had four children: Lucretia Arnau, Kathy Mullen (Bob), Susan Harriss, and Eddie White (Lindy). He graduated from New Hanover High School where he was ranked second in the state for his tennis. He attended North Carolina State for drafting and construction. He joined 252nd Coast Artillery and went into federal service. He was stationed in Aruba for 13 months during World War II. After leaving Aruba he transferred to the Army Air Corp for Aerial Gunnery School at Kendall Field, Florida. He spent two and a half years as a Gunnery Instructor flying in B24 Liberator Bombers. He was honorably discharged from the Air Corp and proudly served his country. Ed then went to work in the construction industry until his retirement. Ed married the love of his life, Elmer, on February 8, 1946. She preceded him in death on Wednesday, October 8, 2008. He is survived by his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many dear friends and relatives. Joyce, Elsie, JoAnn, Lauren, Julie, Charlie, Lynette, Larry, Paulette, Scotty, Roxanne, Jimmy and Pastor Larry were a constant source of love, caring and companionship. A special thanks to Dr. Todd Kornegay and the staff of the Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Life Care Center for their loving care. Ed could strike up a conversation with anyone and within minutes could come away with their life stories in exchange for his adventures of growing up in Wilmington. His cartoon drawings on holiday cards constantly amazed the recipients with his talent and sense of humor. A graveside service will be held at Oleander Memorial Gardens on Wednesday, February 18, 2015 at 3:00 pm.
