
Elizabeth was born on December 17, 1949 to Marion F. Barnhill, Sr. and Ruby Griffin Barnhill in Biloxi, Mississippi.
Elizabeth graduated from New Hanover High School in Wilmington, NC, in 1967. In 1969, she earned a BA in Spanish from The University of North Carolina at Wilmington.
Elizabeth served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Mexico North Mission (1971-1973). She served in Monterrey, Saltillo, Paraiso, and Monclova.
After graduation, Elizabeth taught Spanish and English in Whiteville, NC, and Fayetteville, NC. Elizabeth went on to work in Champaign, Illinois in the Swine Flu Immunization Program and in Rexburg, Idaho in the Employment Security Commission as a specialist in the Job Training Partnership Act (JTPA) before returning to work in Raleigh, NC for the Department of Employment and Training (DET) as a state grant writer. Elizabeth earned a Juris Doctorate degree from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1987 and established a law practice in Raleigh, NC. She worked in New Bern, NC, as a JTPA consultant for the Neuse River Council of Government. She later returned to education and retired in 2016.
Elizabeth had many interests including reading, playing the piano, dancing, collecting china, crystal, and jewelry, studying fashion, architectural design and designers, attending museums and concerts, and giving advice. She was also an avid student of WWII and had a life-long passion for Winston Churchill.
Elizabeth is predeceased by her parents and her sisters, Virginia DeRosa Barnhill Fergus and Mary Ella Barnhill. She is survived by her brother, Marion F. Barnhill, Jr. (Karen) of Sandy, Utah; her sister, Sarah Jane Barnhill, of Holly Springs, NC; her brother, John E. Barnhill (LaDonna) of Cary, NC; her sister, Tammy Grace Barnhill Naylor (Joe) of Fuquay-Varina, NC; her maternal aunt Ann Griffin Gammons of Raleigh, NC; her brother-in-law Ivon E. Fergus, Jr. of Durham, NC; and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
Elizabeth will be interred at the LDS Cemetery in Hampstead, NC on Monday, May 25th at 1:00 PM at a graveside service.
