Elizabeth Hargett Smith

Elizabeth Hargett Smith passed quietly on January 30, 2026 in Wilmington, NC at the age of 96. She was born at Hargett’s Crossroads, Jones County North Carolina. Her parents were Guy Hargett and Ridie Ward Hargett. Elizabeth (Betty to friends and family) was preceded in death by her husband Richard D. Smith. Betty received a Bachelor’s of Music degree from Converse College. She was an accomplished pianist and often played for church services. She was active in local garden clubs and politics where she and her husband lived, mainly in Durham, Raleigh, and Farmville. A memorial service will be held February 21st at 11:00 AM at Myrtle Grove Baptist Church in Wilmington, NC. Visitation at the church will begin at 10:30 AM prior to the service. Memorial donations may be made to Liberty Commons Skilled Nursing Facility to whom we owe a debt of gratitude for the excellent care they took of Miss Betty. She is survived by her sons, Richard (wife Barbara), William, Stephen (wife Karen); her grandchildren, Mark Smith, Kelly Finney (husband Franklin) and Zachary Smith and her five great grandchildren; Ronan and Lachlan Smith, Enoch, Everleigh, and Eli Finney.
