Eugene L. Underwood

Eugene L. Underwood Eugene Lewis Underwood, 88, of Hampstead, NC, entered his eternal rest on August 9, 2012. Gene was born on February 5, 1924 in Hoosierville, IN, the eighth child of the late Peter and Mary Underwood. In 1944, he married the love of his life, Frances Ruth Kent, who predeceased him. In 1973, Gene moved to Raleigh, NC from Michigan to manage the Credit Card office for Amoco Oil. He retired in 1981, but swore never to return to live in the frozen north! In 2000, Gene and Ruth moved west to Johnson City, TN, and only a few months ago did Gene move from there to Hampstead, NC to be near his son, Tim. Survivors include his son, Tim Denise Underwood of Hampstead, NC, and daughter, Mary Alice Jim Rock of Ypsilanti, MI; granddaughters, Sarah Lynn Andy Rumptz, Kaaren Mark Eyre, Mary Zack Nixon, Elizabeth Rock and Laura Rock; great-grandsons, Jacob and Stephen Rumptz, all of Michigan. Seven of Gene's brothers and sisters have predeceased him, but he is survived by his sister, Opal Marks of Bradenton, FL, and sister-in-law, Betty Underwood of Indianapolis, IN; and many nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place, and a family gathering will be held later in Indianapolis, where his remains will join those of his wife of 64 years.
