Born on August 21, 1947, in Wilmington, Frances lived a life defined by quiet strength, unwavering devotion, and a deep commitment to caring for others. A proud graduate of the University of North Carolina Wilmington, she began her professional journey as a Spanish teacher, where she inspired young minds with both language and compassion. She later served within the juvenile detention system, offering guidance and understanding to those in need of a steady and encouraging presence. Frances ultimately joined her husband’s firm, The Lamb Group, where she worked as an industrial safety and health consultant, bringing diligence, integrity, and thoughtfulness to all she did.
Frances was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Ralph and June Roper, and her sister, Phyllis Squires Dabbs.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 50 years, Allen Lamb; daughter, Erica, and son-in-law, Dr. John Mearns of Wilmington, NC; and her cherished granddaughters, Alexis and husband, Jordan Caplanson-Torrens, and Claire Mearns. She is also survived by her niece, Blair, and husband, Tim Smith; her nephew, Ray Squires and wife, Karen; along with many great-nieces and great-nephews.
Frances was a woman of deep faith and boundless generosity whose devotion to others left a lasting mark on her community. A faithful and active member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, she found profound purpose in a lifetime of service and fellowship. Her compassion extended far beyond the walls of her church, touching nearly every corner of the community she loved. She served as a board member for both Lutheran Services Carolinas and Missionary Family Counseling, and served as Campaign Chair for the Be The Light campaign across several dedicated years. A celebrated fixture of the North Carolina Azalea Festival, Frances earned Emeritus Gold status in recognition of more than twenty years of service in various roles, and also served as a Former Director of the North Carolina Spot Festival, overseeing its beloved pageant and variety show. Her belief in the power of community was further reflected in her instrumental role in securing the approval of Trinity Landing and Trinity Grove, as well as her work helping establish a scholarship at Cape Fear Community College in support of Basic Law Enforcement Training — a testament to her conviction that investing in those who serve others is among the highest callings. In all that she did, Frances embodied a quiet and steadfast commitment to lifting up the people and the place she so dearly loved.
Yet for all her civic accomplishments, Frances was equally devoted to her most cherished role — that of mother and grandmother. She brought the same tireless energy and wholehearted enthusiasm to her family as she did to every cause she championed. She was a constant presence at ice skating competitions, cheering from the stands with unmistakable pride, and gave her time gladly to PTA meetings, Girl Scouts, and booster clubs, ensuring her daughter and granddaughters always felt supported in their pursuits. No endeavor was too small to deserve her attention, and no milestone passed without her encouragement. Whether she was fastening a booster seat or cheering at a rink-side, Frances showed up, fully and lovingly, for every chapter of their lives. Her daughter and granddaughters grew up knowing, without question, that they had in her a champion who believed in them completely.
Frances will be remembered for her service to others, her resilience, and the profound love she had for her family. Her presence brought comfort, her wisdom offered guidance, and her legacy will live on in the lives she touched so deeply.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 12, 2026, at 11:30 am at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. Interment will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 11, 2026, at Andrews Market Street Chapel from 4-6 pm.
