Gary was born in Schenectady, NY to loving parents, Huldah and Sidney Miller. His parents, brother Lee, and niece, Amy, preceded him in death. Surviving him are Gary’s wife of 66 years, Marjorie, his children Cheryl (Don), Craig (Melissa), Heidi, Eric (Anna), his grandchildren Zachary (Anne Marie), Elliot, Kyndra, Jennifer, and Arlo. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Joan Miller, his sister-in-law Marion Sutherland(Art) and his nieces, Julie (Wayne), Carolyn (Erik), Tracy (Kevin ), and Laurie (Ted). He is further survived by his great nieces and nephews, Taylor (Emma), Jacquelyn (Eric), Bobby (Saide), Caroline (Nathan), Alyssa, Elizabeth, Isabel, Lexi, Elyse, Arielle, and Evelyn and his great great nephew James. Gary’s friends throughout the world will also miss him dearly, as will his dog, Bella!
As a child, Gary’s family moved about quite a bit, but finally settled in Suffield, Conn. where he attended and graduated from Suffield Academy. He then attended Wesleyan University where he earned his bachelor degree in Mathematics. While attending Wesleyan, Gary was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity. Also while attending Wesleyan Gary went on a blind date with Marjorie. When Marjorie got home, she told her friends, “I just met the man I’m going to marry” and three years later they tied the knot!
Gary and Marjorie moved to Georgia, where he attended Georgia Tech. He gained his bachelor in Industrial Engineering and welcomed his daughter, Cheryl, into the world. From Georgia he moved to Kinston, NC to begin his career with DuPont. It was in Kinston that he welcomed the births of his children Craig, Heidi, and Eric. Next, Gary and his young family moved to Seaford, Del. for nine years. He moved to Wilmington, NC for 9 months, then traveled with Marjorie and two of his children through Europe, and off to Isfahan, Iran, where he began his next assignment with Polyacryl, Iran. With the start of the Iranian Revolution, his work in Iran ended and he was transferred to Wilmington, Del. Finally, Gary was transferred to Dordrecht, Holland, where he retired from DuPont after 35 years.
Gary and Marjorie retired to Surf City, NC where they lived until hurricane Fran left their neighbor’s roof in their driveway. They decided they no longer needed to live so close to the ocean and moved off the island to the mainland in NC. Summers were spent in Maine, on Sheepscot Lake. There, Gary found a house across the lake from his brother, Lee. The entire Miller family has spent days, weeks, or summers there relaxing and exploring the lakes, mountains and coast. Between dinners of lobster and breakfasts of Gary’s famous corn eggs, life was good!
Retirement for Gary meant travel. He and Marjorie traveled the world visiting family and friends on multiple continents. His friends and family also traveled to him, enjoying his generous hospitality.
Gary volunteered throughout his life, including with the Boy Scouts, while his sons were young, and was active in his churches, serving on vestries and many committees over the years. He was a founding member and first president of the Sheepscot Lake Association.
Family was important to Gary and one way to show his love and support was through projects and sharing ideas. If you needed help, wanted to run an idea by someone, or wanted to talk car repair and tinkering, Gary was your guy! He loved taking things apart and, usually, putting them back together again! He always had a project or ten going around the house and was generally ready to offer ideas for the projects family members had going, as well! He attended concerts, plays, sporting activities, dance, art shows, and important occasions for his family throughout his life.
Gary’s funeral will be held at 11 AM on June 3rd, 2023 at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 107 Deerfield Dr, Hampstead, NC.
