George R. Block, Sr. George R. Block, Sr., 78, of Hampstead, NC, formerly of Terryville, CT, was delivered into God's Hands on Friday, June 3, 2011. He was surrounded by his loving family as he finally decided that the 6-year struggle against multiple cancers was over. His cheerful personality and friendship will be missed by all who knew him. He was born September 4, 1932 in Bristol, CT, to the late Robert and Helen Block and came from a family of eight. Having lived through the Great Depression, his parents instilled a great value and religious foundation that he honored, practiced, expounded upon, and taught to his children until the day he died. He was best friend, confidante and lover to his wife, Charlene, for almost 56 years. He is survived by his family: wife, Charlene; a son, George Block, Jr. Christina, three loving daughters, Lori Nodine Dennis, Lisa Block-McCommon Mark and Linda Rode; four beloved grandsons, the Nodine grandsons: Jeremy, Brandon, Luke, and Jake Cassagrande-Block; four great-granddaughters, Kylie, Faith, Julia and Emma; one sister, Marie Ardis of Baltimore, MD; and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by some pretty remarkable grand-dogs and grand-kitties that will always remember the treats and the new green tennis balls. He joined the Army in September of 1950, where he served with honor throughout the worst of the fighting until 1952, when he was reassigned to Germany. He earned two Bronze Battle Stars, and served under the UN Forces in Germany. He was honorably discharged in October 1953 as a Corporal and needed just a little more time to have earned his Sergeant stripes. He was a member of the American Legion here in Hampstead, NC. He retired from General Electric in 1988 after 33 years of loyal service, and learned how to play golf. His dream was to live on a golf course, and he did. He played golf with some pretty remarkable family and friends. We wish to thank the Lower Cape Fear Hospice for their help, direction and devotion, and especially his nurse, Betty, whom he really adored. A funeral service will be 12pm Monday, June 6, 2011, at Andrews Hampstead Chapel with Rev. Preston Wells officiating. The family will receive friends Monday at the funeral home from 11am until the service hour. In lieu of flowers, please direct all donations in George's name online or by mail to the Prostate Cancer Foundation, 1250 Fourth Street, Santa Monica, CA 90401, or the American Cancer Society, PO Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123-1718, or Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401. We love you, George/Dad and will forever hold you in our hearts.
