Harry Thomas Bennett was born 1943 in Richmond, VA to Mary W. Bennett. He lived on Wrightsville Avenue with his grandmother, Arnie Pearl Pennington Bennett, and Japatha Thomas Bennett.He was graduate of New Hanover High School in May 1962.
He drove for Southeastern Freight Lines throughout the US until March of 1965. Then, he began his military career in the U.S. Air Force at Plattsburg, New York. In February 24, 1968, he married his beautiful wife, Dawn Furnia. They had two daughters, Lisa Bennett and Shelly Johnson, two granddaughters, Shelby Johnson and Brianna Johnson as well as a great-granddaughter, Willow Marie Smith, all of Wilmington NC.
He lived in Wisteria Lane for 53 years. He was a member of Seagate Fire department where was Fire Chief for 6 years and a charter member of New Hanover County Fire Commission for 3 years.
He began working November 11, 1968, for El Dupont, Cape Fear Plant retiring December 29, 1996. While working at Dupont, he worked part-time at Wilmington State Port Police during Desert Storm. He decided in June of 1997 and began working for the US Postal Service. In June of 1998, he left the Postal Service and started working for Loomis Fargo Armored Car Service. In 2001, he was promoted to Loss Prevention Supervisor for the Wilmington District. In September 2003, he started at AKAL Security at Sunny Point Ocean Terminal. In October 2006, they reduced his staff and he took the OSHA 100-hour course. He was OSHA certified. He was a Site Safety Supervisor for OSHA.
After being disabled, he was working Navassa Fire Department to get them certified, A the time, Navassa had the 8th largest tire dump in the state of NC. He got it all cleaned up. Aside from his ordeal, he received the Epa badge for the town of Navassa, NC.He was disabled veteran, painted lettering on billboards, signed, and the airplane on the USS-NC Battleship, firetrucks, etc. In February 2008, he was hired by Guardsmark at PPD.
Harry was an independent person who was self-sufficient in everything he accomplished. He always was the life of a party and conversation. He was a great provider for his family and exceptional friends to others. He will be greatly missed.

A Gathering of Family and Friends will be held from 12:00pm to 1:00pm on Saturday July 11, 2026 at Coble Funeral & Cremation Service at Greenlawn Memorial Park.
A Celebration of Life Service will start at 1:00pm in the Coble Chapel.
