

Helen F. Nelson, lovingly known as Oma, passed away peacefully at her home in Wilmington on December 8th, 2023. She was born on May 3rd, 1934 in Stolberg, Germany. Helen was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Andrew D. Nelson Sr. and two cherished brothers.
Helens joy in life was her family and she especially delighted in her role as a grandmother, always eager to share stories about her time as a "young grandmother" so she could actively engage with her grandchildren.
Helen had a passion for her many hobbies among them was knitting where she created slippers, doll clothing, blankets and scarves with love. Helen loved playing Pokeno and UNO, making every game a joyful occasion. She also shared her talent for traditional German baking and preserving cherished family recipes. Helen loved Polka Music and celebrating her German heritage by attending German festivals. Helen loved to host gatherings with family and friends, bringing joy to every celebration.
Helen is survived by her devoted children; Charlotte Siena of Middletown, NY. Charlotte and her husband Frank have three children and five beloved grandchildren. William Nelson and his wife Carol of Vass, NC. They were blessed with three children and three loving grandchildren. Jean Harrett and husband Brett of Detroit, MI where they shared their lives with three children and eight cherished grandchildren. John Nelson and his wife Cathy of Virginia Beach, VA. Helen is survived by her brother Horst Freirich of Fritzlau, Germany. She is also survived by nieces and a sister-in-law in Germany, who held a special place in her heart.
Helen was a dedicated member of the Windermere Presbyterian Church in Wilmington, NC, where her faith was a source of strength and community.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Lower Cape Fear Life Care in Wilmington, NC or Novant Health, Zimmer Cancer Institute.
A memorial service will be held at Andrews Market Street Chapel at 10:00am on Saturday, December 16th, with burial to follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park.
