

Lifelong Wilmington resident Herbert T. Fisher died peacefully at his home on May 4, 2018, after a long illness. He was 88 years old. He was born November 23, 1929, a son of Theodore and Freda Fisher. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Sylvia Rose Watson Fisher; his children: Pamela Snyder and her husband, John, of Wellesley, Massachusetts, Carlton Fisher and his wife, Julie, of Wilmington, and Diana Abbott of Wilmington; his grandchildren: Jeremy Snyder and wife, Kylie, Matthew Snyder, Mason Fisher, and Anna Fisher; his brother, Emile, of Atlanta, Georgia; and his sister, Jean Smith, and her husband, Max, of Springfield, Virginia. He was predeceased in death by his parents, his sister, Emily, and his brother, Ray.
Herbert built, owned, and operated the Varsity for many years before starting Coastal Realty with H.C. “Slim” Wallace. After Slim’s death, Herbert continued to run the company for many years with his son, Carlton. Herbert loved business and commercial real estate and continued going into the office even in recent months. He was active in the Board of Realtors for many years, had been Realtor of the Year, and received a Lifetime Achievement Award. He was a long-time member of First Baptist Church, where he formerly served on the Board of Deacons and was a Deacon Emeritus.
As a graduate of New Hanover High School, Class of 1949, Herbert kept in touch with many classmates. After attending Wilmington College, he became an ardent supporter of UNC-Wilmington and continued to enjoy events and ball games there for many years. He loved spending time at his summer home on Wrightsville Beach.
Visitation will be at Andrews Mortuary, 1617 Market St., Monday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church on Tuesday, May 8, at 2:00 P.M. Interment will be private. Memorial donations may be sent to First Baptist Church, 411 Market St. or The Jo-Ann Carter Harrelson Center, 20 N. 4th St., Wilmington, NC 28401.
