Isom was born in Winnabow, North Carolina on December 23, 1927. He attended Bolivia High School in Brunswick County, graduating in 1947. At Bolivia High, he drove the school bus and was the Starting Center on the Basketball Team.
Isom joined the Coast Guard in 1948, attending the Academy in Groton, Conneticut in 1949. He was stationed in San Francisco, California; Iwo Jima, Japan; New Orleans, Louisiana and Port Isabel, Texas. In 1958 he met Blye Eunice Norris (November 28, 1921-May 21, 1996) at the Crystal Restaurant down the street from the Atlantic Coast Line Station in Wilmington, NC. After their marriage he served in the Coast Guard at Fort Macon‐‐Morehead City NC, Washington NC, Hobucken NC, the lighthouse tower on the Frying Pan Shoals, overseas in Targabarun, Turkey in 1968-69 and he retired from the Coast Guard while serving at Wrightsville Beach North Carolina in 1973.
After retirement from the Coast Guard, Isom was a barber in the Wilmington area but the time he most enjoyed every year was Deer Hunting Season. After the passing of his beloved wife Eunice, he rarely missed a day of the Season with his friends in Brunswick County from 1996 until this last year, in 2012. When not hunting, Isom enjoyed a long term skirmish with weeds, irrigation and pine straw in his efforts to maintain his yard to his exacting standards.
Thankfully, he was unaware of his illness this last hunting season and was able to thoroughly enjoy himself. Isom’s living room wall is lined with his hunting trophies.
Isom leaves two sons, Mark Lewis, of Marina del Rey, California, and Everett Lewis, of West Hollywood, California.
A Memorial Service will be held at 12:00 Noon in Winnabow, North Carolina, at Mill Creek Baptist Church on Friday, February 7, 2013.
The Staff of Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Home is honored to serve the family of Isom Dunbar Lewis.
