

He was born in Monroe, N.C. on August 31, 1928, the son of Jesse J. and Pearla Taylor Cox of Wilmington.
He is survived by his children, Mary Anne Watts and husband Ron of Wilmington, and Tom Cox Jr. of Wrightsville Beach; two grandsons, Robert Watts and wife Whitney of San Antonio and Bill Watts of New York City, granddaughter Christina Watts of San Jose, and three great-grandchildren, Natalie Watts, Dylan Watts and Reiley Watts of San Antonio; brother-in-law H.L. Johnson of Zebulon; and niece, Debbie Idol and nephews, Ben and Steve Johnson. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Janet Johnson of Zebulon, brother, Jimmy Cox of Myrtle Beach and great grand-child Ryan Elizabeth Watts.
Mr. Cox was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1951 and served his country honorably during the Korean War as an Infantry Small Arms Combat Squad Leader achieving the rank of Sergeant First Class and earning his Expert Combat Infantryman’s Badge. He was awarded the Purple Heart after being wounded by enemy fire in Operation Counter where his unit received the Presidential Unit Citation.
Upon returning from the war, he became very active in community affairs as a member of the Kiwanis Club of Fayetteville, NC, a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Shrine Club and serving as President of the Exchange Club of Wilmington, NC in 1965-1966.
He was an avid golfer, jazz and blues musician and earned his pilot’s license on the day of his sixteenth birthday. His favorite book was Dr. Norman Vincent Peale’s “The Power of Positive Thinking” and he always had a smile and a friendly word for everyone. He was a loving and devoted father with a strong spiritual belief in God and like Jonathan Livingston Seagull, wanted to fly higher and faster than yesterday.
Graveside services will be held at Oakdale Cemetery in Wilmington this Friday at 11:00 a.m. and friends will be received by the family afterwards at the home of Tom Cox Jr., in Wrightsville Beach.
