

Dr. James "Jim" Dixon, born May 15, 1932, passed away peacefully on Father's Day, June 21, 2026.
Jim was a devoted Christian, Korean War veteran, educator, scholar, loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather whose life was marked by faith, service, integrity, and a deep commitment to education. He leaves behind a legacy that extends far beyond his family and into the lives of countless students whose futures were shaped by his guidance and leadership.
After serving honorably in the United States Army during the Korean War, Jim pursued higher education with determination and earned his PhD from Emory University, beginning a distinguished academic career that would influence generations of students. A respected educator and scholar, Dr. Dixon founded the Political Science Department at the University of North Carolina Wilmington in 1970 and served as its chairman for decades. Through his dedication to teaching, mentoring, and academic excellence, he helped build a department that continues to serve students and the university community today. His vision, leadership, and commitment to higher education left a lasting impact on UNC Wilmington and the many students whose lives he touched throughout his career.
While his professional accomplishments were significant, Jim's greatest joy was his family. He was a steady source of wisdom, encouragement, and unconditional love. His daughter, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were blessed by his example, his strength of character, and his unwavering devotion to those he loved.
Those who knew Jim will remember his intelligence, kindness, integrity, gentle spirit, and quiet faith. He lived a life of purpose and service, always striving to make a positive difference in the lives of others.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Cullen and Fannie Dixon, and his beloved wife, Helen Dixon.
He is survived by his daughter, Susan Dearing (Chris); grandchildren Andrea Rhodes (Adam), James Cartrette, Christina Huff (Derek), Julianne LeMonds (Daniel), and Stephen Boyette, Jr. (Heather); eight great-grandchildren; and many extended family members, friends, colleagues, former students, and loved ones who will cherish his memory.
Though his family mourns his passing, they take comfort in the promise of eternal life and rejoice in knowing that he has been welcomed into the arms of his Heavenly Father. His race is finished, his work is done, and he is at peace.
A service celebrating Jim's life and Interment will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 7, 2026 at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 1311 Shipyard Boulevard, Wilmington, NC 28412.
