James Quinn

James “Jim” Daniel Quinn, age 92, passed away on April 26, 2022, after a brief illness. Jim was born in Brooklyn, the son of the late Roseanne Dillon and John Quinn, of counties Westmeath and Offaly, Ireland. He was preceded in death by a son, James, Jr., two brothers, John and Thomas and a sister Rosemary Farrell. He attended St. Saviour’s School and St. Francis Prep in Brooklyn and St. Peter’s College (now University) in Jersey City, NJ. Upon graduation he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served as an MP at Fort McPherson in Atlanta and was part of the General’s honor guard. After his discharge he earned his MBA from NYU.

Jim and his wife of almost 63 years, Maureen Mulligan, were married May 16, 1959, in St. Agnes Cathedral in Rockville Centre, NY. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a sister, Elizabeth Smallman and three children: Aileen Hogan (Mike), Patty Carver (Dave) and Dan (Mary). He is survived also by six grandchildren who were his greatest joy: Michael (Magdalena Straub), Conor (Dr. Sarah Brnich) and Brendan (Morgan May) Hogan, Colleen Carver, and Patrick and Larkin Quinn.

Jim was in the business forms and printing business his entire career. When he retired in 1995, Jim and Maureen left Rockville Centre and relocated to Wilmington, NC where they were fortunate to make many wonderful friends. He still loved to go back to New York City and get his New York “fix”.

After retiring to NC, Jim took up golf and enjoyed playing with a nice group of men. He became active in the Ancient Order of Hibernians, serving as treasurer for quite a few years. He became a reader at Church and a member of the knights of Columbus. One of Jim’s greatest joys was delivering Meals on Wheels monthly. He enjoyed the thanks and blessings he received from the recipients.

It took some time, but he finally discovered that he liked being retired and came to love being in Wilmington and walking at the beach. He particularly enjoyed the annual “beach week” visits from his children and grandchildren. These weeks included many shared meals (and banana splits!), lots of laughs, and the opportunity to witness his grandchildren mature into loving adults (who could enjoy his secret recipe Irish Coffee). Because of him, they will always remember that “there is always room for dessert”.

Jim and Maureen traveled the country to be present for the grandchildren’s special events and milestones, including birthday parties, elementary school Grandparent days, high school graduations, college graduations, and numerous sporting events. They never missed an opportunity to share in these life events.

Jim and Maureen were also blessed with an adopted family in Cary, NC neighborhood where they shared many holiday celebrations.

The family would like to thank all those at New Hanover Regional Medical Center for the wonderful care and compassion shown to Jim. He told us many times about how nice everyone was to him and what good care he was getting.

A funeral Mass is scheduled for Friday, May 13 at 11 am at St. Mark Catholic Church, 1011 Eastwood Rd., Wilmington. The family will receive family and friends at the Church prior to the Mass.
