

He was born March 26, 1921 in Forsyth County to James and Mattie Grubbs Wall.
He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, MaryAnn; Children: Nanette, Theresa, Sheri, and Robert. 5 Grandchildren Tommy, Zachary, Kandice, Casey and Logan. 8 Greatchildren: Austin, Cody, Alyssa, Chase, Emma, Jayden, Riley, and Cailey.
Jim enlisted in the Army Air Core during World War II, flying combat missions as a bomber crew member. He was discharged in 1945 and entered college, but was recalled to active duty in the Air Force for Korea. He flew missions in North Africa, Italy, Sicily, Anzio, Salerno and Korea. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, Eamet Campaign Medal with 3 bronze stars, Korean Service Medal, and Air Medal with 9 Oak Leaf Clusters. After Korea, he received his BS in Chemistry from University of Hartford Connecticut, and worked as a Chemist for R J Reynolds and then the State of North Carolina. Jim was a amateur artist, and won several awards for his paintings, water colors and charcoal portraits. After retiring to Wilmington, he spent his time with his family, listening to big bands, Irish, and Celtic music, telling old war stories, taking long walks on the beach, and teaching turtles how to swim.
Visitation will be held from 6:00pm to 8:00pm on Friday March 15, 2013 at Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Home, 3915 Oleander Drive Wilmington, NC 28403.
Funeral Service will be held at 11:00am on Saturday March 16, 2013 at Coble Ward- Smith Funeral Home.
Graveside service will follow at Oleander Memorial Gardens. Military Honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post 10 Honor Guard.
