Jane Shepard Thompson

Jane Shepard Thompson, 87, passed away on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at Novant NHRMC, surrounded by the love of the family she cherished so deeply.

Jane was born on November 20, 1938, to the late Alfonzo Cox, her biological father; J.T. Shepard, her adoptive father; and Hazel Shepard.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Winston Thompson. Together, Jane and Winston built a life centered around family, faith, service, and love. For many years, they were active members of the North Carolina Rescue Association, sharing a commitment to serving others and their community. Jane and Winston were also longtime members of the Elks Lodge, where they enjoyed many years of fellowship, friendship, and involvement within their community.

Jane was also a dedicated member of Ogden Baptist Church, where her faith and church family were an important part of her life.

Above all else, Jane cherished her family. Nothing brought her greater joy than having her large family together, especially during the holidays. Those gatherings, fi lled with generations of the family she and Winston created, were among her most treasured times.

Jane is survived by her three sons, Ray Thompson and wife, Patti; Roy Thompson and wife, Debbie; and Rex Thompson and wife, Robin.

She also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren, Amanda Morgan and husband, Sean; Chase Thompson; Tiffany Thompson; Josh Thompson; Jillian Gerganous and husband, Bryan; Walker Thompson and wife, Lillian; and Jason Williams.

Her legacy continues through her great-grandchildren, Finley and Ivy Morgan; Alyssa, Aden, Alex, Ashleigh, and Adalynn Andrews; Clara, Corbin, Cassie, and Colton Gerganous; Kenleigh, Kamden, and Roetta Jane Thompson; and Bradley and Daijiro Williams.

Jane is also survived by her sister, Gail Williams; brother, Al Cox; niece, Sarrah Gilley and husband, Dalton; great-nephew, Micah; honorary son, Robert “Sport” Mercer and wife Wendy; as well as her sweet and faithful dog, Ruby, who held a special place in her heart.

Jane's life was richly blessed by the family she loved, the faith she carried, the community she served, and the many memories created over 87 years. Her family will especially remember the joy she found in simply having everyone together. Her presence at those family gatherings will be deeply missed, but the traditions, stories, and love she helped create will continue through the generations that follow her.

The family will receive friends on Monday, August 31, 2026, from 5pm until 7pm at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel.

A funeral service celebrating Jane's life will be held on Tuesday, September 1, 2026 at 1pm, at Ogden Baptist Church, 7121 Market Street, Wilmington, NC, offi ciated by Pastor Danny Justice.

Following the funeral service, a graveside service will be held at Oleander Memorial Gardens, where Jane will be laid to rest alongside her beloved husband, Winston.

Jane will be deeply missed by her family, friends, church family, and all who had the privilege of knowing and loving her.
