John attended Middlesex School in Concord MA and earned a BA degree from Trinity College in Hartford CT. After working for the Aetna Casualty and Surety Co., he joined the HD Segur Insurance Agency in Waterbury CT which he later owned.
John spent much time in the volunteer arena working with various agencies including
the Red Cross, Waterbury Mental Health Assn, and the United Way. He became chairman of the Connecticut Red Cross and served on their national nominating committee. He served on the United Way Boards of Waterbury, CT, Stuart, FL., and Boone, NC. He mentored school children for many years in Wilmington, NC and at the Crossnore School in Crossnore NC. John was on several advisory boards and served as the president of the Independent Insurance Agents of CT. His greatest passion was to help those less fortunate.
John was also a lifelong athlete. He played sports all through school and college. He won awards for squash at Trinity. His passion was golf, and he was an avid fly fisherman. He was also a diehard Boston Red Sox fan and a huge supporter of UCONN Women's Basketball.
After he turned his business over to his employees, he and his wife Pat retired to Stuart, FL., then to Blowing Rock NC, and finally Wilmington NC where his daughters live.
John leaves his wife Patricia Burbank of 66 years, daughters Betsy Burbank and Linda Burbank of Wilmington, NC, grandchildren Erin Kerr of Wilmington, NC, Zachary Kerr of Asheville, NC, Maria Dassinger (Timothy) of Clayton NC and great grandchildren Samantha Dassinger and Tyler Rogers of Clayton NC. He also leaves his brother James C Burbank and several nieces and nephews .He was predeceased by his sister Marion Bailey.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Wesleyan Chapel United Methodist Church in Scotts Hill, Wilmington, NC. on August 19, 2017 at 11 am..
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Crossnore School, PO Box 2491 Crossnore NC 28616, or to the charity of ones’ choice.
