September 24, 1940 - September 12, 2021
John Alan Hancock passed away on Sunday, September 12th and is now at peace with our Lord and Savior. He was born on September 24th, 1940 in Raleigh, NC to Louise McGlaughon Hancock and Earl Turner Hancock. He was raised with his younger sister, Linda in Wilmington, NC by his mother and maternal grandmother, Daisy King McGlaughon.
John graduated from New Hanover High School (1958), completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics at North Carolina State College (1963), and a Master of Nuclear Engineering degree at Catholic University of America (1965). He was a fraternity brother of Sigma Alpha Epsilon where he developed several enduring friends.
John started his career at Fort Belvoir, VA working as an engineer in the nuclear power program. The bulk of his career was invested at Florida Power Corporation where, over thirty years of employment, he was involved in nuclear and coal production, and ultimately became part of the leadership as a senior vice-president before retiring in 1998. He always felt fortunate to have met several distinguished mentors who became lifelong friends.
John met his wife of 56 years, Donna L. Jacques, while living in Alexandria, VA. They married at Christ Church in Alexandria in 1964. He and Donna raised their two daughters Karen and Susan while living in Florida. After retiring at age 58 to Wilmington, he devoted himself to family and friends, and life on Howes Creek. He belonged to Saint Andrew’s On-the-Sound where he served for several years on the Vestry. He cherished his significant role in the lives of his grandchildren. He helped to raise his granddaughters, Lindsey and Lauren Hancock, as a second father, and was dedicated to them and his grandson, Harrison Stefanowicz, as a loving figure and teacher of life lessons.
John is preceded in death by his father and mother, and survived by his wife Donna, daughters Susan (John) Stefanowicz and Karen Hancock, and grandchildren Lindsey Hancock, Lauren Hancock, and Harrison Stefanowicz. He is also survived by his sister Linda Sperry and her three children: Marie, George, and Dorothy.
Services will be held at Saint Andrews On-the-Sound Saturday, September 25th at 11am with reception to follow.
