John Edward Miller known affectionately as Johnny Cakes to family, 79, of Leland, North Carolina, passed away on February 20, 2026, leaving behind a family who adored him and a lifetime of memories shaped by love, laughter, and quiet moments at his favorite pier.
John was born on September 9, 1946, in Stony Point, New York, a place that remained part of his story even as life carried him elsewhere. No matter where he lived, John had a way of making any place feel like home, simply by being himself: steady, kind, and always ready with a gentle smile.
At the center of John’s world was his family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Kathleen Miller, his constant partner and companion. Together they built a life defined not by grand gestures, but by everyday love, the kind that shows up in shared routines and unwavering support.
John was a proud father to Christopher Miller and his wife Diane, and to Tara Miller and her wife Heather Duncan. Nothing brought him more joy than his role as “Grandpa” to Chloe and Lona, who held a special place in his heart.
He is also survived by his sister, Joan Woods, and her husband, Curtis Woods. John was preceded in death by his brother, Edward Miller, whose memory he cherished throughout his life.
John had a signature expression of affection that his family will never forget. The women in his life were lovingly known as his “honeys.” It was a simple word, but it captured the importance of and dedication to the women in his life.
He found happiness in life’s quiet, uncomplicated pleasures. John loved fishing not just for the sport of it, but for the peace it brought him. Time near the water, rod in hand, was where he felt most content. He also had a remarkable patience for puzzles and Sudoku, happily spending hours working through challenges with focus and quiet determination.
John will be remembered for the comfort of his presence, the warmth of his humor, and the deep sense of care he gave so freely. His love was constant, his pride in his family unmistakable, and his impact immeasurable.
Though he is no longer with us, John’s voice, his sayings, his laughter, and his love will continue to echo in the lives of those who knew him. His family carries forward not only his memory, but a legacy of hard work, determination and unconditional love.
A memorial service celebrating John’s life will be held on March 20, 2026 at 801 Ocean Dr. Oak Island, NC from 4-7 PM.
