

John Preston "JP" Register, age 91, of Wilmington, N. C. passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at the Hospice Care Center in Wilmington. He was born May 3, 1921 in Wilmington, N.C., the son of the late John Thomas Register, Jr. and Bessie Mason Register. John was a member of Freedom Baptist Church of Wilmington. He was a veteran of the United States Navy during World War II, aboard the USS South Dakota during the South Pacific campaign. He was also aboard the USS Roe, USS Pittsburg, USS Chicago, and USS Vicksburg. After attending the University of California Los Angeles he relocated to Wilmington and enlisted in the United States Coastal Guard where he served on the CGC Mendota. He later was employed and retired from McCallum Inspection Company as a timber inspector. Surviving are his son Donald W. and wife Linda P. Register, one granddaughter Tracy L. Register; brothers Kenneth Register and Ralph Register, sisters Annette Smith and Dorothy McCormick. He was preceded in death by his wife Grace Ellington Register and a sister, Hazel Dent. John was known by family and friends to be the person that would do anything for anyone. He always told everyone to "enjoy life" as he did every day. Thank you to the amazing staff at hospice that assisted us during this emotional time. The family will receive visitors from 6-8pm, Friday, October 19, 2012, at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 11am, Saturday, October 20, 2012, at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel with Rev. Dodd Mays officiating. Burial will follow at Oleander Memorial Gardens.
