John Stanley Scott, age 73 of Rocky Point, died July 19, 2012 at his home. John was born in Wilson County May 12, 1939, son of the late Council Hardy and Nina Varnell Scott. He is survived by his wife of forty-nine years, Georgia Amerson Scott; a daughter Penny Scott-Owens, and her husband Calvin Owens; three granddaughters Kelsey Scott Owens, Victoria Rose Owens and Calli Alexandra Owens; each one was the glimmer in their Papa's eyes. John also leaves behind his ever present sidekick, Sissy. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jean Scott. John was the owner/founder of Scott Electric Company Inc. until he retired in 2011. John enlisted in the US Navy after high school and served on the USS Black. He cherished his country and was always ever mindful of the sacrifices made by our military. John was an avid sportsman who loved the thrill of the hunt. Throughout the years it was not uncommon to find him in the icy waters of NC duck hunting or sitting patiently in a deer stand at Riley's Creek Hunting Club or dove hunting in Argentina. In the 80s and 90s John took his love for fast cars directly to the straight track of NHRA. He enjoyed those days of driving his Vega to victory and owning a rail car that won many races in the Southeast. During those times John truly experienced his ""need for speed."" But through the years there was a sport that was a constant. He had enjoyed skeet shooting since his time serving in the US Navy. John began shooting competively in 1966, and he was a life time member of the National Skeet Shooting Association. He was a member of Buccaneer Gun Club, and had seen it grow from its original days. John was committed to helping the club expand so that many could enjoy a sport that can last a lifetime. He served as a chief referee for the state of NC for many years and traveled throughout the Southeast, winning matches. John loved to do his personal best, but he also enjoyed winning with squads, sharing the victories. He loved to pass on his knowledge especially to youth and others could see his passion for the sport of skeet shooting. John and Georgia were able to travel many miles in their motor home, spending time with fellow skeet enthusiasts and cultivating friendships. John was a competitor in everything he did, always fighting the best fight he could. There was nothing he enjoyed better than breaking a 100 but on Thursday evening, John broke his last clay target. The family will receive friends from 2:00-3:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 22, 2012 at Andrews Mortuary on Market Street with a funeral service following at 3:00 p.m. Pastor Devin Kerns will officiate. Interment will follow at Riley's Creek Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ken Whitley, Andy Keith, Henry Grubb, Tommy Lancaster, Bubba Gore and Ray Daniel. Honorary Pallbearers will be the members of the Buccaneer Gun Club. Contributions can be made to Buccaneer Gun Club f/b/o Youth Skeet PO Box, 11339, Wilmington, NC 28404 or flowers can be sent.
