John Volner Thompson Jr.

John was married to the love of his life, Linda, for 72 wonderful years. Together, they built a life and a family filled with love, memories, and countless moments that will be cherished forever.

He is survived by his loving wife, Linda Thompson, their children: Marcus Thompson (Susan), Terri Larkins, and Johnny Thompson, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, his brother Glenn Thompson (Anne), sister Sylvia, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Randy Thompson, his sister, Jessie Mae Riley (Ralph), and half-brother Elbert (Bubba) Privette.

John was a hardworking man who took great pride in providing for his family. Early in his career, he worked at B&W, where he laid steel for the boilers on the first nuclear submarine. He was a Stevedore Foreman at Wilmington Shipping Company, where he worked the 1st ship to dock in the Port of Wilmington. His dedication and work ethic carried throughout his life. He later became part-owner and General Manager of M&N Equipment Rentals, where he worked until his retirement. Since John was known to never sit still, after retirement, he drove cars for Bob King automotive.

John had many other accomplishments & accolades in his life. He coached many years of youth sports and was awarded the lifetime Optimist membership. In 2001, he and his boat crew, aboard the Linda Poo, won the Wrightsville Beach King Mackerel tournament. He was also a member of Winter Park Baptist Church for many years.

John enjoyed the simple pleasures in life. He loved golfing, fishing, and cheering on the UNC Tar Heels. But above everything else, John loved his family. They were the center of his world and the greatest source of his pride and happiness.

John was a man who worked hard, loved deeply, and always made sure the people he loved were cared for. He never needed recognition or praise. His quiet strength, generous heart, and unwavering love spoke for themselves.

He was a man who left an impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him. His absence will be profoundly felt, but the love he gave, the lessons he taught, and the memories he created will live on through those that loved him.

A memorial service will be held Friday, September 25th at 2:00 at Winter Park Baptist Church.
